  4.     In your article on the medical uses of lasers (TECHNOLOGY,
  5. Sept. 18), you perpetuate the misconception that cataract surgery
  6. is done with a laser. Primary cataract removal is still performed
  7. in a traditional surgical manner. It is true that the neodymium-YAG
  8. laser you describe may be used to create an opening in the
  9. posterior capsule remaining in the eye after the cataract
  10. extraction has been performed, but the idea that the cataract
  11. itself can be eliminated as you imply by "zapping" with a laser is
  12. incorrect.
