In your article on the medical uses of lasers (TECHNOLOGY,
Sept. 18), you perpetuate the misconception that cataract surgery
is done with a laser. Primary cataract removal is still performed
in a traditional surgical manner. It is true that the neodymium-YAG
laser you describe may be used to create an opening in the
posterior capsule remaining in the eye after the cataract
extraction has been performed, but the idea that the cataract
itself can be eliminated as you imply by "zapping" with a laser is
incorrect.
